Starlink Backup Internet

In Cascade’s many experiences with client internet connectivity challenges, it has become clear that a backup internet connection is non-negotiable in the world of family office property management

Traditionally, this problem would be solved by installing another, hard-wired, connection at the property.

Hard-wired backup connections have several problems:

  • High-cost installation and subscription fees.
  • Exposure to many of the same risks as a hard-wired primary connection (eg. both internets may be offline at the same time!).
  • There are limited hard-wired options available, particularly in rural or remote regions of the world.

A new option has emerged that addresses these issues.

Satellite internet itself is not a new technology. For decades providers, like Hughes Link, have taken existing Satellite infrastructure from the ’80s and ’90s designed for GPS tracking and retrofitted this infrastructure to provide access to the internet. While a great idea, these GPS tracking satellites lack the latest technology and are too high in orbit, to support modern internet needs like video calls or streaming.

Starlink, recognizing this problem, began sending “low-orbit” satellites, designed specifically for transmitting data, into space. Low-orbit satellites, hence their name, sit closer to the surface of the earth and use modern technology to relay a stronger signal.

Cascade has been exclusively recommending and installing Starlink as backup internet connection across client properties.

Here are the results our clients have seen:

Cost Effective

  • With a 30-day free trial, no contractual obligations, no hardware rentals, and a $150 per month price point, Starlink is significantly less expensive than a wired alternative.

High Performance, Diversified

  • Low-orbit satellite internet regularly reaches speeds of over 200mbps, versus 20mbps with previous satellite internet technologies.
  • Starlink is not exposed to the risk of physical damage or a catastrophe that would impact traditional, hard-wired, internet infrastructure.

Versatile Option

  • With ready-to-go coverage across the entirety of the United States, western Europe, and parts of Australia, a Starlink connection can be activated with days of notice in many places.
  • Starlink will be expanding to Africa, Asia, and South America in the coming years.

Starlink’s low-orbit satellite internet has proven itself as a no-brainer backup internet service for property management teams. We are looking forward to helping our clients use this technology and will be closely monitoring how the service develops over time.
